The Global Contract Project

The conference “A Global Contract based on Climate Justice – The Need for a New Approach Concerning International Relations” is the first part of a multi-year-project which calls for a coherent and comprehensive Global Contract.

The objective of this first stage – the 2008 stage – was to raise awareness of the notion of climate justice and to conduct a broad and open discussion on the basic principles and core elements of a global contract based on climate justice. This discussion took place at the conference "A Global Contract based on Climate Justice – The Need for a New Approach Concerning International Relations” in the European Parliament on 11 November 2008 and its main results fed into a Concluding Memorandum. The memorandum was elaborated as a common message of the organisers and hosts as well as many of the speakers and participants in view of the ongoing international negotiations on a global post-2012 climate agreement, concretely the Conference of Parties in Poznan in December 2008. Please see "About the conference" for further information.

The second stage of the project – the 2009 stage – is currently being planned. It will build upon the first stage and will grasp some central aspects for a more in-depth discussion. The larger context of the second stage are the ongoing international negotiations which will culminate at the Conference of Parties in Copenhagen in December 2009. Further information on the 2009 activities will be published here shortly.
